May 6, Baltimore Kinetic Sculpture Race. Let’s take some floating works of art and race ’em

The Kinetic Sculpture Race in Baltimore adds the one thing that’s missing from sculpture –  Wacky Racing.

Amphibious, human powered works of art race against each other.

They battle for the honor of awards like GRAND MEDIOCRE EAST COAST CHAMPION AWARD (finishes right in the middle), and the highly prized NEXT TO THE LAST AWARD (finishes, well, next-to-last).

The eight-hour rally covers 14 miles and includes pushes into the Chesapeake Bay, mud, and sand.

You might notice a food theme this year, the 29th in the race’s history.

This was in keeping with host American Visionary Art Museum’s current exhibit, “YUMMM! The History, Fantasy, and Future of Food.”

Here are some of the winners from May 6, 2017.

Some of the Kinetic Sculpture Race awards are as …ahh unique as the sculptures themselves.

Grand Mediocre Champion: Cowsmic Moobeams

Grand but mediocre.  The Grand Mediocre Award is for finishing exactly in the middle of the pack.

Golden Dinosaur: In a Pickle

The Golden Dinosaur goes to the team that has either the first or most memorable breakdown

Worst Honorable Mention: Green Slime Mold

This award honors the sculpture whose half-baked theoretical “engineering” did not deter its Pilot from the challenge of the race.

Engineering: BEATrice the unBEATable

Engineering Award is for conquering course obstacles through unique or glorious design.

Art: Petal to the Metal

The Art Award prizes color, costumes, artistic designs, kinetic motion, humor and theatrical appeal. Not forgetting mass crowd- and media glory-seeking.

People’s Choice: Tick Tock the Croc

2017 Big Weiner Award: Kracken Calamari

Judges’ Fill-in-the-Blank: Oatmeals on Wheels

Golden Flipper: Jake’s Nightmare

The Golden Flipper is bestowed upon most interesting water entry.
