Producers of Game of Thrones prank Samwell Tarly. And he falls for it.

This is the costume that Game of Thrones producers had Samwell Tarly wear while relaxing at home

This is not the robe-wearing Samwell Tarly fans or actor John Bradley know.

One word – Awkward!

Game of Throne prank – with a massive codpiece

The producers wrangled the show’s costume department to stage a mock fitting for Bradley in a fake costume before shooting began.

“We thought it would be great to make the costume ludicrous, but just believable enough to not know it was a gag – so he’d think he would be wearing this on screen,” showrunner Dan Weiss says. The result, “was all rental stuff, very Henry the VIII, with Tudor bloomers and a massive codpiece that wasn’t even the same color as the rest of the costume.”

The mischievous idea came from John Bradley’s good friends, Kit Harington (Jon Snow) and Hannah Murray (Gilly).

Game of Thrones prank number WHAT ?!

Producers have played legendary pranks on Game of Thrones actors. Kit Harrington (Jon Snow) was convinced he would be horribly disfigured as early as the first season.

The phoney script Harrington received was gory enough for Game of Thrones :

”… When the fire is finally out, we see by torchlight that all of Jon’s hair has burnt down to the scalp. The skin on the top half of his face has been melted in the extreme heat, blistered and pustulant. Despite what must be the extreme agony of permanent disfigurement, Jon stands stoically by his master’s side.”

Alfie Allen (Theon Greyjoy)thought he wouldn’t survive past season two. The bogus finale script finished Theon Greyjoy off. Young Bran Stark declares: “This is my Winterfell, not yours,” and then stabs Theon in the heart!

Rose Leslie who plays Ygritte hates to sing in public. Naturally, producers sent her a prank script where she performs a 20-line song with lyrics including : “Oooooooh, I am the last of the giants, so learn well the words of my song, or when I am gone the singing will fade, and the silence shall last long and long.”

The cast remembers

Jaime Lannister actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau decided to have his revenge Game of Thrones -style after learning that Jaime was going to have a slight hairstyle change.

He sent showrunners an email with a picture of him with a military buzz-cut. He had shaved all his hair off!

He let them stew for a while with visions of lawsuits, expensive re-shoots, wigs…

Until he emailed them back that the picture was from five years ago – he hadn’t cut his hair at all.

Patchwork Elephant

Bradley looks on the bright side of his Game of Thrones prank: “They’ve still got a bit of budget to set aside and make me look like Elmer the Patchwork Elephant.”
