Why video game characters used to have a blood type

Remember back when video games had manuals and characters had a blood type?  What was that all about?

Kinda like astrology in the West, blood type is said to predict certain personality traits in Japan.

Blood types can affect just about every part of your life, from making friends to getting a date — or even a job.

This personality profile association with blood types really started to hit mainstream Japanese culture in the 1970s. Author and journalist Masahiko Nomi, in his book Ketsueki-gata de Wakaru Aisho (Understanding Affinity by Blood Type), theorized the concept, and the book became a bestseller.

Type As, like Resident Evil‘s Leon Kennedy, are said to be patient but stubborn, whereas Type Bs, like Street Fighter‘s Dhalsim, are said to be creative, but unforgiving.
